Matopos National Park

Rugged cultural experience

A mere 35km drive from Zimbabwe’s second major city, beautiful Bulawayo, the Matobo National Park offers so much for the curious explorer.

Characterised by a mind-blowing landscape consisting of kilometres of daunting and spectacular granite rock formations, the are instils a sense of tranquillity in all of its visitors.

The natural peacefulness of the Matobo Hills, paired with the calming sense of wonder when viewing the fascinating San rock paintings left behind by our ancient ancestors, makes one search one’s soul and finds peace within themselves immediately.  Love at first sight and a place where one forgets the dramas and stresses of modern-day life.  Peace at last!

The area had this exact effect on Cecil Rhodes, the founder of colonial Rhodesia. It is reported that he was so captivated with the landscape and the serenity of the area that he requested that he be buried here.  His wishes were respected and today, Cecil Rhodes’  burial site can be visited at Malindidzimu Hill.

He was actually so enamoured with the soothing landscape that he wrote in his will that he wished to be buried here.  And he was.  Today, Cecil Rhodes’ tomb can be visited at Malindidzimu Hill.
